Can just doing pushups or other body-weight only exercises build muscle?
matthewq10 asked:
I am wondering if body-weight-only excercises are able to build mucle if they are done to muscle exhaustion, or does it take heavier and heavier weight?

No combine with cardio-vascular exercises

No, those will work just fine. As you become more muscular, you will weigh more anyway. You can also go more deeply into the push up, and do them more slowly to further challenge yourself.

Of course it can, in fact when swimming I have found that since doing press ups my muscle mass has increased a lot quicker. If your looking to tone up, then combine it with plenty of cardio work

You can use body-weight exercises to build muscles. It will take different exercises and different sets and reps to equate the lifting done in a gym. Before gyms everyone used body-weight exercises because that was all that was available. You do not have to do an exercise to exhaustion, control your sets and reps to get the best effect.

Yeah, that’s really all that you need to do, it’s not going to make you huge, but it’s like benching your weight- that’s all I do, and it works for me

You don’t see very many wimpy marines fresh out of boot camp do you?

And cardio-vascular exercise has absolutely nothing to do with gaining muscle mass, in fact if that is your only goal-muscle mass- it is a waste of calories that could be used to build muscle.
